"A Friend With Skin"
Have you ever shared your heart with someone and suddenly felt the atmosphere grow cold? Have you felt the Sword of Judgment come down swiftly and stab you in the heart as you poured out your feelings? Or maybe you were attacked with the lash of a self righteous spirit as it came crashing through the rudder of the tongue telling you to repent and pray. Maybe the person just withdrew their presence from you and stayed their distance because you were a “negative influence.” Or maybe, just maybe, you’ve been in that lonely place where you needed someone to talk to and found no one who you could reach out to.
Yeah! Yeah! I know God is always there, and His Presence is never to be taken lightly or for granted. It is an awesome privlege to have one-on-one access to an audience of one with the Ancient of Days, the King of kings, the Comforter - Elohim, the creator of the universe anytime and any place. Please, use your access often and never, never, ever forget the price Jesus paid for your access. What I’m talking about is after you poured out your heart to God the Father, thanked Him for Jesus and asked for the healing power of the Holy Spirit to flood your being and still felt like you needed mmh a little something... Maybe you felt like the little girl who when her daddy told her not to be afraid of the dark because Jesus was always with her replied, “I know, I know, but I need somebody with skin.”
Now I am in no way suggesting using people as a dumping ground for every negative thing that happens to you. I’m not even talking about rehashing the same old, same old every time you get into a conversation with someone. I am definitely not talking about bashing and gossiping about people. That is sin! I’m talking about a relationship like David and Jonathan had where you can acknowledge truth, clear your head, and deal with the situation. A relationship that allows you to take off the mask, let your hair down and still be safe, feel loved and know that your are accepted.
This is one of those sticky subjects and one of those sticky relationships which people don’t like to touch and maybe I shouldn’t be touching it. However, I’ve got to get out of the box. The box of polite untouchables that keeps us spiritual yet separate. The box of hiding that keeps us hurting while running never allowing ourselves to be touched and never knowing how to truly touch others. There are many viewpoints on this subject, and you may not agree with mine. It’s not a debate. I’m just stepping out of the box trying to get a little fresh air as I air out a sacred cow. In case you don’t know, one definition of a sacred cow is a subject that is understood, maybe questioned but never discussed.
First let’s let the Word speak for itself…We’ll pick up the story in 1 Samuel Chapter 18 where David and Jonathan meet. David has just killed Goliath, and Abner, Saul’s Captain of the Host has brought David to King Saul so that David can identify himself. Let’s immerse ourselves in the scene:
